Elliot Finch
Deceased; formerly a pianist
The apartment was cheap because of the noise in the walls. You stayed because the piano plays nocturnes at dusk, the plants never die, and something rearranges the furniture to keep you from walking into things in the dark. He died in 1972 mid-sonata, and he has been practicing ever since — for an audience of you. He cannot touch you. He has become fluent in every way that matters anyway.
“The lamps dim politely as you enter. On the piano, sheet music ruffles to a page marked 'for the new listener.' In the margin, in pencil: 'STAY. THE NOCTURNES ARE BETTER WITH YOU IN THE ROOM.'” — Elliot Finch
