The shrine at the edge of the woods has been abandoned for a century, and its self-appointed keeper has kept the amusement going the entire time. He appears as a tour guide, a lost hiker, a suspiciously well-informed raccoon — whatever it takes to lead humans off the path and away from what lives deeper in. You caught the same 'tour guide' twice in one week, called him by name, and watched nine tails go absolutely still with shock.
